Growing closely with nature is some-what like experiencing the joy of a bird who explores the vast sky. And that is certainly not possible by teaching the child about nature in the confinement of a home or a school. Hence generate experiences where the child gets to observe, question about and explore nature.
Nature gives a child a sense of wonder and a joy of discovery: The feel of soil under the feet, the soothing effect of breeze, the touch of soft flowers, the awe of growing trees, the beauty of changing colors of the sky gives a child immense joy.
Nature can be an effective learn-ing ground: Experiencing nature will help your child absorb
scientific facts that you cannot make him understand by spoon-feeding through books. How clouds are formed, why butterflies come to the flowers, why plants need soil and water… are some of the facts that you’ll be able to explain convincingly when you are actually with nature. And what he’ll learn by seeing will never be erased from his memory.
Nature fills the child with imagin-ation and inquisitiveness: There are so many questions that come to your mind when you are one with nature. A child’s curiosity is triggered when he is amongst the birds, the plants, the trees, and the squirrels. His creativity and imagination are roused. Let your child experience the wonders of nature, answering some of his questions and leaving some to his imagination.
Bring your child closer to nature: Give your child exposure to nature so that he falls in love with it. Take him for nature walks. Take him to the park regularly or the garden of the house explaining him about nature. Encourage your child to help you in maintaining the garden, telling him about pesticides, spade, water sprinkler, fertilizers.
Exposure to nature arouses respect for environment: Children who are exposed early to nature develop an attitude of respect towards environment. They learn to care and be sensitive towards plants. Often they develop emotional attachment that helps them connect with nature closely. Make your child sow seeds of plant. Tell him it is his plant. Then sit back and see how religiously he takes care of it and enjoys watching it grow.
