All parents want to see their child happy. And they often shield their delicate, innocent child from failures and disappointments thin-king he is too young to take them. But we should not forget that disappointments are an inevitable part of life. Hence, strengthen your child to face odds in life.
Let him accept that he cannot win every time: If your child loses a competition or is defeated in a match, don’t pacify him with lame excuses. Discuss with him that it’s not necessary that he is a winner in every venture he undertakes.
Let him know that he cannot always get what he wants: Don’t fulfill every demand of your child. Tell him certain things are too expensive; or out of reach; or he has to wait for the right time to get them.
Let him be mentally prepared rather than be confused: Sometimes children have to face separation at home, serious illness and even death. Instead of leaving him wondering, talk to your child about what’s happening around and assure him that this phase will pass away.
Let him learn from his disappointments: One learns and discovers himself in adversity. The same holds true for children as well. Allow him to learn from his disappointments the importance of hard work, treasure the moments of happiness and value what he has.
Let him see light at the end of the tunnel: Infuse optimism in your child. Tell him one failure or disillusionment is not the end of the road. There is always another chance. This kind of positive attitude will help him overcome his distress and emerge as a much stronger personality.
