Putting learning into context is one of the best ways to help children get a deeper understanding. With the objective to familiarize children and give them a concrete experience about the food we eat, Prideens were taken for a visit to a nearby grocery store.
The activity offered a great experience to our Prideens as they got the opportunity to know about a variety food items available in the store. During the activity, teachers asked them probing questions like “Do you know what we will do with fruits?”; “Do you like to eat fruit and vegetable salad?”; “What food and veggies they will pick for their fruit and veg salad?” etc. Children were given the opportunity to explore the fruits and vegetables by touching, feeling and smelling them. They were also encouraged to name them.
Reinforcement of the visit was done in the class by the teacher who encouraged them to share their experience of the visit and also make a collage of the food items they saw in the store. They also encouraged students to talk about healthy and junk food.
The activity helped children to have a better understanding and its application in-real life. .It was absolutely an enriching experience for our Prideens.
